Teeth Whitening for a Brighter Smile

Image of white smile in Alexandria, MN

Many of our patients need teeth whitening. Our patients come into the office and they complain that their smiles have lost that bright, white look. They may have stains that won’t go away, or their teeth may have turned a dull shade of yellow.

Some of these people turn to whitening toothpastes that they find n their local pharmacy, but those only provide limited results, and they remain unhappy, hiding their discolored smiles whenever possible.

Dr. Joseph Haack can help, with professional whitening treatments. The treatments are customized to the patients’ mouths, and they can do the treatment in the comfort of their own homes.

What are Whitening Treatments

In order to have a professional, healthy appearance, you need an attractive smile. Studies have shown that job applicants with a bright, white smile are more likely to receive offers of employment than those with yellowed, stained teeth.

People tend to gravitate to a person who constantly smiles, while someone who rarely smiles due to stained teeth will find it harder to meet new friends.

Because of this, teeth whitening treatments are one of the most requested in our office. The treatment involves the application of a whitening agent to the patient’s teeth over several days.

The chemical reaction of the whitening gel breaks down stain molecules, removing stains and discoloration. Most patients see a noticeable difference in just a few days.

How Teeth Get Stained

The color of your natural teeth consists of the reflection of light off of the tooth enamel and the color of the dentin layer beneath it. The dentin layer has a yellowish color, and people who have a thinner layer of enamel may experience some discoloration from the dentin showing through.

Enamel that is extra smooth or has rough patches reflects light differently, and can cause discoloration as well.

Stains present in two different ways. Extrinsic stains discolor the outside part of the tooth, while intrinsic stains emanate from inside the tooth. Extrinsic stains sometimes result from aging, but we usually cause them ourselves with the things we eat and drink, and lifestyle choices we make.

Tobacco contributes to more tooth discoloration than any other substance. Tobacco contains two ingredients that stain teeth, tar and nicotine. Naturally colorless, nicotine turns yellow when mixed with oxygen, and tar has a naturally dark color. Smoking or chewing tobacco for even a short period of time is enough to turn your teeth several shades darker.

Food and drinks make up most of the other main contributors to extrinsic stains. Red wine contains tannins and chromogens, which have acidic properties, and will quickly stain teeth.

White wine, meanwhile, does not stain teeth on its own, but its acidic properties leave teeth vulnerable to stains from other foods and beverages. Coffee and cola drinks each contribute to the staining of teeth, as does black tea. White, green, and herbal teas, however, have no staining abilities and can be consumed without worry.

Dark berries, such as blueberries and cranberries will cause stains, as will dark sauces, like tomato sauce and soy sauce.

Intrinsic stains typically result from decay, root canal issues, restorations, or trauma. They may also come from high levels of fluoride or consumption of the antibiotic tetracycline as a child. Tetracycline taken by pregnant women can also cause intrinsic stains in children.

The Whitening Process

To start the process, you will make an appointment with Dr. Haack. He will examine your teeth and perform a professional cleaning on them so you can start the process with clean teeth.

The doctor will take impressions of your teeth that he will use to design custom-fit, reusable whitening trays. When your trays have been fabricated, the doctor will provide you with a whitening gel to go with them, and give you instructions on how to use the system.

You will perform the treatment in the comfort of your own home. Simply fill the custom trays with the whitening gel and wear them for the period of time recommended by the doctor.

The whitening agent contains peroxide, which will release oxygen molecules. These molecules absorb into the enamel of your teeth, breaking up stain molecules and causing them to fade away.

After a few days, you should see noticeable results, and when you finish the treatment your smile will be up to eight shades whiter.
