We have seen many advancements in the field of orthodontics over the last few decades. Research has provided us with options such as clear, removable aligners like Invisalign and ClearCorrect and braces that can align teeth in just six months. Many of these options, however, are limited in the scope of the correction they can provide.
Clear aligners, for instance, can handle mild to moderate misalignment issues, but may not have the ability to correct severe issues. Six month braces, meanwhile, can correct misaligned teeth, but cannot do anything about issues with the patient’s bite.
Dr. Joseph Haack offers all of these options in the right situation, but for young patients and those with severe alignment or malocclusion issues, he recommends traditional braces.
Traditional Braces have been around for many years. They are the standard among patients looking to straighten their smile. Today’s contemporary braces are made of exceptionally strong metals, as they need to be able to stand the test of time while they are on your teeth.

What Do We Mean by Traditional Braces?
If you grew up before the turn of the millennium, you should remember traditional braces. If you did not wear these bracket and wire braces as a teenager, you probably knew somebody who did. For these braces, the doctor bonds a series of metal brackets to the front surface of the teeth, then threads a metal wire between them.
The doctor gradually tightens the wire over the course of treatment, which guides the teeth into their correct position. Dr. Haack can use traditional bracket and wire braces to correct even the most complicated alignment issues, including malocclussion. Patients typically wear bracket and wire braces for a period of at least two years to correct their alignment problems.
When Should You Choose Traditional Braces?
Dr. Haack provides traditional braces as an excellent option for just about any alignment issue. For the most complex tooth issues, however, he feels these braces are a necessity. The doctor provides traditional braces as the best solution for patients who suffer from severe malocclusion, a problem in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together such as an overbite or crossbite.
Traditional braces also provide the best option for patients who have protruding or rotated teeth, or teeth that have grown in crooked due to overcrowding, which we cannot fix using aligners or six month braces.
Dr. Haack typically uses traditional braces as the first phase of two-phase orthodontic treatment for young children. The objective of increasingly popular two-phase orthodontics program is to treat orthodontic issues in young children before they become larger issues in their teen years.
Most orthodontists agree that a child should have his or her first orthodontic screening by the age of seven. If Dr. Haack finds a problem at this time, he may recommend treating the issue early, while the child’s jaw still has some growing to do and he can make adjustments more easily. The first phase generally begins when the child’s first four permanent molars and central incisors have come in. The doctor fits the child with bracket and wire braces, usually only on the permanent teeth, to start correction of the problem. Following phase one, Dr. Haack fits the child with a retainer until phase two begins after losing the last of the primary teeth.
Benefits of Traditional Braces
Traditional braces provide many benefits to our patients. They work continuously, 24 hours a day, meaning patients do not need to worry about keeping them in for a certain amount of time or replacing them with the next in a set.
They provide the most precise alignment option available, and with advanced technology we can make them more stylish than ever before. While contemporary braces are metallic colored, there are a number of bands and features that we can utilize to spice them up. Many kids choose multicolored bands to express their individual sense of style and fun. Best of all, traditional braces cost much less than the popular clear aligners!
