Dental Implants Explained

Usually made of titanium, dental implants are tiny posts that the doctor surgically implants into the jaw. They replace the roots of your teeth, providing ultimate stability for restorations. When placed and healed, dental implants can support restorations such as dental crowns, bridges, and full or partial dentures.

When you have teeth missing, the bone in your jaw begins to deteriorate almost immediately. The body senses the missing tooth, and starts sending calcium the bone needs to other parts of the body. This causes your jawbone to shrink, and eventually will cause your face to look sunken or drawn. Biocompatible dental implants actually fuse with jaw bone in a process called osseointegration. The process keeps the bone stimulated, preventing it from shrinking, and provides a secure anchor for the implant and attached restoration.

Implant-Supported Restorations

Dental implants can support most types of restorations. Whether you are missing one tooth or all of them, an implant-supported restoration will provide you with a beautiful, dependable smile. Restorations supported include:

  • Dental Crowns – A single implant can support a dental crown. Once placed and healed, the doctor will attach a crown to the implant, bonding it in place.
  • Dental Bridge – Much like a crown, the doctor bonds this restoration in place after the implant heals. Patients prefer implant-supported bridges because they require no attachment to other teeth. Traditional dental bridges, supported by crowns attached to healthy teeth, require the removal of some of the healthy tooth’s surface.
  • Dentures – Dental implants can support partial or full dentures. The doctor typically bonds partial dentures in place, while most sets of full dentures remain removable. Full dentures snap on and off of the implants with ease, yet they provide superior stability to traditional dentures, with no slipping.

Having Implants Placed

The process of having implants placed begins with a consultation with Dr. Haack. The doctor will review your medical and dental history and any medications you currently take. He will perform an exam to determine if he needs to complete any work before placing implants. Some patients may need a bone graft or sinus lift before having implants placed, especially if they have low density in their jawbone. Patients must have good bone density to support the implants. When the doctor feels you have qualified for the surgery, he will develop a treatment plan covering everything from anesthesia to recovery, and set your surgery date.

Placing dental implants typically requires two outpatient surgeries. On the day of your first procedure, our welcoming staff will greet you and make you comfortable. They will begin the administration of anesthesia. When you have been sedated, Dr. Haack will surgically place the implants in your jaw. With all implants placed, he will fit you with a temporary restoration to wear during the healing process, which can take three to six months. During this time, the doctor will have a US-based dental lab create your restoration.

When the implants have healed, you will return for your second procedure. At this time, the doctor will expose the implants from their healing place under the gums. He will attach tiny connectors called abutments to the implants. Then the doctor will secure your restoration on the connectors. He will bond crowns, bridges, and most partial dentures in place, while full dentures will typically remain removable and snap in and out with ease.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer patients with many benefits. Because they fuse to the bone in the jaw, they prevent it from shrinking. Dental implants provide superior stability over other types of restorations. Implant supported dentures do not require adhesives and provide stability and security without wobbling or slippage. Patients looking for a gorgeous, stable smile should look no further than dental implants.
