Crowns

Crowns

A crown is a restoration that covers a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size. There are many reasons why a crown is placed. The reasons can include bruxism (teeth grinding), decay, cracked fillings, and, root canals. Also, a tooth that is beyond repair with filling material should have a crown. The reasons to restore such a badly damaged tooth are durability, cosmetic appearance, and overall support of the chewing function.

Types of Crowns

There are a few options you have when choosing to crown your tooth. These options include a full porcelain crown, a porcelain fused to metal crown, or a full gold crown. When deciding which crown to choose, we consider the tooth location, the position of the gum tissue, the amount of tooth that shows when you smile, the color and shade of the tooth, and the function of the tooth.

Procedure

Several steps are involved in placing a crown. We will set aside 2 appointments for the entire process. The first step is to remove all the decay in the tooth and remove the outer portion to accommodate the thickness of the crown. An impression is taken to make an exact model of the prepared tooth and then it is sent the dental lab where your new restoration will be crafted. In the meantime, you will have a temporary restoration that will resemble your natural tooth so you can continue with your daily routine without worrying about a missing tooth. During your second visit, we will place your final restoration. The crown is fitted comfortably into your mouth and permanently cemented, leaving you with a beautifully restored smile.
